Hl2.exe has stopped working (tf2)?

I just downloaded Team Fortress 2 for the PC through Steampowered.com and every time I click to play the game this message pops up "hl2.exe file has stopped working." I have tried so many things to fix this... PLEASE help me. I'm desperate. I've been working on this for 4 days now. Its driving my crazy!
